all intents and purposes the Telefunken system. Information

was however vouchsafed to the effect that whereas the "spark"

system had formerly been employed this was now to be changed

to the "are" watem. It was anticipated that one result of this

conversion would be a smaller degree of interference with other

stations, notably that at Hong Kong, which has often complained

of the "jamming" of its messages by the Hozan installation.

Receiving and transmitting is carried on by day as well as by

night.

It is obvious to the untrained eye that the Hozan installa-

tion is of great power, and it was stated by the officer in charge

that transmission had actually been effected as far as Aden.

Great secrecy is observed; no mention of the station appears to

be allowed in the local press and every approach is flanked with

notion-boards in Japanese and English warning of the penalties

imposed on persons taking photographs or making notes of its

features. The officer in charge assured us that the installation

possessed no special distinctive features as compared with

similar plants in Europe and Amerion, but whether this statement

was true or false I have no means of ascertaining.
